Beginner's Guide to Fireworks

Are you having problems with understanding all of the terminology in the fireworks industry? I have created this beginner's guide so you can understand the basics of many types of fireworks and what each product does.

Roman Candles: These are long sticks that shoot colorful balls out of them. They come in many different sizes. The smaller ones can be held in the hand while lit and the larger ones come with a sharp point so you can stake them into the ground. The large ones get placed in the ground while they shoot many shots into the air. They often contain up to 300 shots. Roman Candles are a classic firework that everyone has to try. The balls shot out are either colorful or contain effects like crackling or reports.

Firecrackers: This is often one of the first things that people think of when fireworks are mentioned. Firecrackers are the classic firework that people of all ages use during the day and night time. They are essentially little containers of flash powder that explode emitting a loud explosive noise. They sometimes have a little bit of color to them, but their main characteristic is the loud bangs. Firecrackers come in individual crackers or strips of multiple crackers. The strips can be strips of 12, 16, 100, 200, or even upwards of 20,000. The strip firecrackers are often the more popular product because of the multiple explosions and almost machine gun like noise to them. Regardless of the occasion, if fireworks are involved, firecrackers are a must have.

Bottle Rockets: Bottle rockets are almost like a small firecracker attached to a thin stick. You place these rockets at an angle so they can self propel into the air and then explode. Some bottle rockets even feature a whistle effect. When the rocket propels itself upward, it emits a loud shrieking whistle sound before exploding in the air. Bottle rockets are a great product to use in the daytime to get a pyro fix before the night time when you shoot off aerial shells and cakes.

Fountains: Fountains are usually small to medium sized objects placed on the ground. When lit, they emit showers of sparks, crackling, and even aerial effects. Fountains can be a great product to use with the family because they put on a little show of their own. They often stay lit for upwards of 3 to 4 minutes. The sparks and bright colors of fountains are sure to leave the children mesmerized.

Artillery Shells: Artillery shells are the number one product of fireworks. They are the shells that explode in the sky and are the main effect of any fireworks show. Artillery shells come in either canister or ball form. Canisters often propel higher into the air with a louder explosion when the shell breaks in the sky. Ball shells tend to not be as powerful, but break much more symmetrically than canisters. This is because of the design of a ball shell. Since it is a round sphere, the stars and effects inside of the shell are dispersed much more evenly through the sky once the shell breaks. If you are looking for loudness and huge breaks in the sky, I would suggest getting canister shells. If you prefer a great symmetrical effect in the air with great color, I would recommend picking up some ball shells. After you have chosen your preferred shells, you load them into a mortar tube. You can either use the tube that comes with the shells or buy your own if you are looking for high quality tubes that will be durable. You will need to make sure the tube is secured so that it does not tip over and fire the shell at the audience or personal property. Once lit, the shell will self propel out of the tube and into the air about 100-150 feet above. Then, the shell will break and emit a certain kind of effect ranging from bright red stars to blue glitter with crackling. Artillery shells will surely leave your audience impressed with your fireworks display.

Aerial Cakes: Aerial cakes are essentially small artillery shells fused together to create a miniature show in one product. For example, "Crazy Exciting" by World Class Fireworks is a 25 shot cake. This means that the product will fire 25 shots into the air. Cakes are one of the most popular items for display shows because they feature many shots and effects while only having to light one fuse. Cakes come in many different sizes. Some cakes are 100 gram cakes meaning they only contain up to 100 grams of explosive composition. These are very small cakes that only have a few shots in them, but only cost a couple of dollars. You also can purchase 200 gram and 350 gram cakes. These are medium sized cakes that have decent size breaks to them once fired into the sky. You can pick these cakes up for about $8 to $20. Then, you have the largest cake size available to consumers, the 500 gram. These cakes contain up to 500 grams of explosive composition and have very large breaks, almost the size of some large artillery shells. Cakes are a wonderful product to produce a small backyard show for your family and/or neighbors. They can last a long time while having an extremely wide variety of effects with small to massive breaks in the sky.

Novelties: Novelties are great for the kids. They are usually small individual products shaped like toys such as a fire truck or a frog. Novelties are a great way to get the kids involved without exposing them to too much danger. These products can sometimes be shaped like vehicles and they will self propel themselves like they are driving and emit sparks and other colorful effects. These are a fantastic product to pick up for kids to get involved in the fireworks fun.

I hope I was able to give you some sort of background information on fireworks that you can use to purchase products this year. If you have any questions about products or terminology at all, don't hesitate to contact me.
