Pennsylvania Legalizes Fireworks
On November 13, 2017 the state of Pennsylvania legalized the sale of Class C consumer fireworks. More detailed information about this story can be read on the Jake's Fireworks blog https://blog.jakesfireworks.com/blog/consumer-fireworks-now-legal-in-pennsylvania.
The law that was passed allows Pennsylvania to now sell and use Class C consumer fireworks like bottle rockets, artillery shells, firecrackers, roman candles, aerial cakes, and more. This bill allows Pennsylvania residents to now use these fireworks to celebrate the 4th of July, New Year's Eve, and many other holidays. The key pieces of the law state that people must be 18 or older to purchase, possess, and use fireworks and the tax rate on fireworks will be 12% on top of the 6% sales tax. This is a hefty tax percentage to place on fireworks. But, legalizing the fireworks is most likely another way for the state to generate revenue, so a high tax is expected.
One benefit from this law is entrepreneurial opportunities for Pennsylvania residents. They can open up their own firework stores to try to fill the demand of the state since there are not many retailers yet. This enhances the local economy by bringing in revenue and creating jobs. Another benefit is the increased tax dollars to the state. This is probably the only reason this bill was passed, so the state could generate additional revenue. Especially with a high tax on the products, the state of Pennsylvania should be looking at much higher revenues in the months of May to August during fireworks season. This bill has benefits for the local economies of Pennsylvania, the residents, as well as the state itself. I think it is a great idea for the state to legalize fireworks.
